According to Paramount, the sequel to the 1986 blockbuster, in which Tom Cruise reprises the iconic role of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, has surpassed the $1 billion mark at the global box office.
Maverick is also the 50th Hollywood film to surpass $1 billion in global box office, not adjusted to inflation, and only the second film to do so since the recent pandemic. It now joins Spiderman: No Way Home from the MCU in the hall of fame.
Maverick grossed an impressive $126 million in its first weekend in 4,700 US theatres.
It has already outscored the MCU’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which was released three weeks earlier.
Surprisingly, this is the first time in Cruise’s four-decade career that he has reached the billion-dollar mark.
The movie revolves around veteran fighter pilot Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, who leads a group of young recruits on a perilous mission.
