When applying to the University of your choice, during the application process, you will be faced with the submission of a personal statement.
This may seem daunting, having to write a long statement about yourself to impress the University to give you a spot.
You may not be the most interesting person, but that doesn’t matter as you can still produce an amazing personal statement.
Tips to Write an Amazing Personal Statement
1- Show your passion for the course
Writing about your passion tells the reader that you care about the course and this would make them choose you over other candidates if you really show your passion for the course. To show the passion you have inside of you, write about where this passion came from, like from a subject you took from school, a video you have watched on YouTube or even an article you’ve been reading online.
You can also write about things you do that shows your passion, for example, those who are applying to Computer Science may write some code in their free time, so they should write about how they like writing code.
2- Introduce About Yourself
One of the main purposes, why Universities ask you to submit a personal statement, is so they can get to know more about you. You can do this by writing about what you do outside of school. This may be a hobby or a club that you participate in. Just write about what you like to do. However, while you write about things you like to do, also make it meaningful by adding in extra details about the skills you are gaining and improving from the activities you do. For example, if you write about playing a type of team-based sport, talk about your teamwork and communication skills or even if you like playing video games, that you are problem solver and like to solve puzzles.
3- Positivity is the key
Keep the whole personal statement about only the positives of yourself. The positives that make you appealing to the University are all that matters to them as one thing they care about is what positives can you bring to them compared to other candidates applying to the same course. If you do start to write about negative things, it will just be putting yourself in a disadvantage.
4- Look up references
You may be struggling with the structure of the statement or want to know how to properly structure your statement. So you should look at other personal statements online and see how they are structured, to then decide on your structure. Once the structure has been planned, start writing your statement and keep on following that structure.
5- Get someone to read over it
Your Statement has been fully written and you think you’re ready to send but I would recommend against sending it immediately instead, let someone read over it. Doing this will allow you to receive feedback and make some improvements on your statement if it needs any.
If you’re unsure about who to give your statement to, you can give it to anyone including teachers, parents, siblings or friends.
