On Monday, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) suspended the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority’s (PEMRA) notification banning live telecasts of former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s speeches.
While hearing the ex-prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief’s challenge to the ban, IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah observed that PEMRA appears to have exceeded its authority. The IHC notified the PEMRA and Pakistan’s Attorney General.
Justice Minallah went on to say, “There is no valid reason to prohibit Imran Khan’s speech at this time. The PEMRA lacks the authority to issue such a restraining order.”
The court also ordered PEMRA to name an officer to appear and explain the issuance of the notification, suspending it until the next hearing on September 5.
